Born in Tulsa, Oklahoma
Lives & works in the Pacific Northwest, USA
I have been drawing and painting all of my life. I was 11 when I won third place in a juried show for a watercolor I painted while on a family vacation in Galvaston, Texas.
In high school, I learned to paint portraits and they became my passion. They also proved to be the perfect way to finance my college education. At age 19, I turned my attention to drawing caricatures and worked at the Movieland Wax Museum, the Disneyland Hotel and Universal Studios. Two years later I became the first person to privately own and operate a concession at Marineland in Palos Verdes, California. There I hired and trained other art students to do my style of portraits and caricatures.
After graduating from Chapman University I began teaching art in the Anaheim Union High School District where I was a classroom teacher, master teacher and department chairman.
In 1978, I left teaching in the public schools to persue my dream of helping students who had fallen through the cracks and were unable to keep up with their classmates by providing them with individualized tutoring in reading and math.
One year later, I founded Sylvan Learning Centers, and over the next eight years, grew Sylvan to become the country's leading provider of supplemental education.
In 1986, after having sold Sylvan and resigned as chairman, I moved to Lahaina, Hawaii and began painting again.. There, I enjoyed my retirement from the business world while selling my paintings at a popular Front Street art gallery.
Since then, I have continued to paint and to develop other businesses. Today, I spend my time divided between owning and operating two education compainies and creating my art..
